The Weight has a great post up on the somewhat cryptic messages that have been playing on Radio Bonnaroo that many seem to believe are clues to who will be on this year's line-up - read their thoughts here.

I'll tell you Starbucks knows their audience when it comes to putting out music. Their latest in-store exclusive album will be a live compilation culled from Simon & Garfunkel's November 1969 tour - to be aptly titled Live 1969. The tour was the last for the duo for over a decade and featured selections that would come to make up their final album Bridge Over Troubled Water - read about it here.

In other Paul Simon news the singer-songwriter will be playing a series of shows with some great special guests including David Byrne at BAM this April called Love in Hard Times: The Music of Paul Simon. Here's some more info....

BAM presents Love in Hard Times: The Music of Paul Simon, three unique engagements --all part of a series celebrating and exploring the music and lyrics of Paul Simon. Inspired by locales ranging from the Mississipi Delta to the townships of Johannesburg, the extraordinary music of Paul Simon will be part of BAM's Spring 2008 season in April. The three programs include Songs from The Capeman, Under African Skies, and American Tunes and will include performers such as Oscar Hernández and The Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Claudette Sierra, Obie Bermudez, Ray de la Paz, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Hugh Masekela, Milton Nascimento, Kaïssa, David Byrne, Luciana Souza, Cyro Baptista,Olu Dara, Grizzly Bear, The Roches, and others including Paul Simon. Phil Ramone is the musical advisor for Love in Hard Times: The Music of Paul Simon.

"We are so pleased that Paul agreed to let us do this series. He is a true New York City and BAM artist--courageous, pioneering, and deeply heartfelt. His unique storytelling through music has touched the world. There is an elegance to his music," commented BAM Executive Producer Joseph V. Melillo. BAM President Karen Brooks Hopkins added, "Paul Simon's vast body of work over 40 years warranted a new kind of retrospective. The first event of the series, Songs from The Capeman, (April 1-6), will be a concert staging of the 1998 Broadway show The Capeman that includes the doo-wop, rock and roll, and Latin rhythms of a special New York musical era. The music of The Capeman was written by Paul Simon with lyrics by Paul Simon and Derek Walcott. The Capeman is based on the life of Salvador Agrón, a Puerto Rican teenager convicted of murder in 1959. Grammy-nominated Oscar Hernández and The Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Latin Jazz vocalist and original Capeman cast member Claudette Sierra, Latin Grammy-winning artist Obie Bermudez, Salsa and Jazz singer Ray de la Paz, and Paul Simon are confirmed to appear with more artists to be announced. This engagement will also feature a special appearance by Little Anthony and the Imperials.

Under African Skies (April 9-13) rekindles Paul's passion for the rhythms of South Africa and Brazil represented in the Grammy Award-winning, critically acclaimed albums Graceland and The Rhythm of the Saints. Simon will be joined by South African trumpeter and composer Hugh Masekela, Brazilian singer/songwriter Milton Nascimento, Cameroonian vocalist Kaïssa, David Byrne, Brazilian songstress Luciana Souza, and world renowned Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista. Simon's band will include: Jay Ashby (trombone), Anthony Cedras (keys & accordion), Steve Gadd (drums), Jamey Haddad (percussion), Jim Hynes (trumpet), Bakithi Kumalo (bass), Vincent Nguini (guitar), and Andrew Snitzer (saxophone). Many of which were members of his original Graceland band. Mark Stewart will be the musical director for Under African Skies.

American Tunes (April 23-27) will be a revisit to the quiet railway stations, urban sounds, and immigrant dreams covering a wide range of songs throughout Paul Simon's brilliant career. American bluesman Olu Dara, Brooklyn-based indie band Grizzly Bear, and harmonic trio The Roches and others to be announced will all be performing along with Paul Simon.

Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings

Back in September after catching the Counting Crows at Farm Aid, I declared it was time we all admitted our love for August And Everything After - and to stop hiding it under hipper bands on your iPod. During their set Duritz and Co. debuted a new tune, and talked energetically about their upcoming release. Well after several delays their new album Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings - their first in five years - will hit stores on March 25th.

The album is a double-disc with Saturday Nights being more of a rock record and Sunday Mornings leaning towards the acoustic, folk infused stuff. Take a listen to selections from both discs...

Good news Lou Reed fans, the ever cantankerous singer has some new music that don't involve interpreting the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe. The Godfather of LES cool has recorded a couple of new tunes inspired by the documentary Nanking - which is about the Japanese invasion of Nanking, China during World War II. Don't be afraid of that description the songs harken back to classic Lou. Vineland Postponed To '09

On the heels that the All Points West Festival would be taking place the very same weekend the promoters of the Vineland Music Festival have decided to delay the fest by a year aiming to launch it in the summer of 2009.

Vineland has been running into some obstacles over the last few months from the local community, but are also sighting the "overall festival traffic in the northeast and big bands touring through this area at the same time" for the postponement. Read the full article here.

The move seems to make sense since it's doubtful both fests could exist and compete in the same market on the same weekend. While we Northeasters have been waiting for a large scale music festival to come over way we didn't think we'd end up with two competing for our hard earned money.

Ernest Goes To Jail...Again

Not good news for those of you hoping that Ernie would return from exile to hit the road in the near future, as Jambands.com had this to report on the other Red Headed Stranger.....

The Jambands.com news staff is disheartened to share news from Albany TV Station WNYT regarding Trey Anastasio. The station is reporting that a Washington County's drug court ordered the guitarist to spend three days in jail last week. The NewsChannel 13 story explains, "A participant in drug court can be sanctioned and sent to jail for a number of reasons, including failing to show up for the program, showing up intoxicated or failing a court-ordered drug test." At present, Anastasio has not announced any touring or recording plans for the coming year.

Things are coming together quickly for the recently rumored, confirmed and now announced multi-day music festival that is set to take place at Liberty State Park. While the name Coachella East kicked to the curb pretty early, the fest now has an official name (and website) of it's very own - let's all welcome the All Points West Music & Arts Festival to our vernacular.

The fest is set to take place the very same weekend as the proposed Vineland Music & Arts Festival - August 8th - 10th. Common sense says that both of these fests will be competing for the same artists, so expect to see some overlap as the line ups come together.

I'm not sure how much I trust a source like Perez Hilton when it comes to music news, but according to his site Coachella may be headed to the East Coast this summer - and somewhere in the New York/New Jersey area. Could this move be in response to the proposed Vineland Music Festival (who is running into some opposition)? Read about it here.

Update: According to this Billboard article Coachella producers AEG Live/Goldenvoice will in fact stage a summer festival at Liberty State Park (which has hosted a number of large scale concerts over the years - it's actually where I caught the first installment of the Furthur Fest)

Team Love For The Felice Brothers

Of all the great bands that I discovered in 2007 the one that I'm probably the most excited about (well maybe besides Vampire Weekend) is The Felice Brothers - whom I've mentioned here before. Well it looks like former tour mate Connor Oberst really digs them too as he's signed them to his label Team Love and will put out their self-title album on March 4th. Here's some info....

"Team Love will release a collection of The Felice Brothers hottest new tunes combined with some select and hard to find tracks from the tour-only full length “The Adventures of the Felice Brothers Vol 1”.

The Felice Brothers self-titled American debut will be available at brick and mortar retailers and digital stores on March 4th. In April, an 180 gram double vinyl version complete with a free download card will hit stores."

The Felice Brothers play their first New York headlining show on February 1st at Mercury Lounge and then hit the road with the Drive-By Truckers.

UPDATE: The Merc show is official sold out, but they have just announced that they will headline at the Bowery Ballroom on April 12th.

It's been nice to see the Robinson brothers playing nice again. Seems like since their comeback a few years back The Black Crowes have been hitting the road pretty hard to reestablish themselves as a viable touring band and come this March they will release their first all-new studio album in seven years - Warpaint (which hits stores on 3/4).

To celebrate the Crowes will be offer up the album in its entirety live on a special run of shows called "One Night Only," here's the dates....

NARCS Vs. Vineland Music Fest

A group calling themselves NARCS - Neighbors Against Rock Concert Site (oh the irony of the choice in the 'ol acronym department) are trying to rally some support against this summer's Vineland Music Festival. According to an article in the Daily Journal the group is ready to mobilize and has voiced the following concerns....

"Many neighborhood residents share concerns about traffic, noise, potential crime associated with the festival and the environmental impact on the area."

The group insists that it isn't against the festival they just don't want it their backyard, and are suggesting an alternate site instead, as well as considering filing a lawsuit to stop it - read the full article here.

You think you were at a great New Year's Eve show? I beg to differ after reading this report from NME on a secret gig involving some of classic rocks heaviest hitters (via NME).....

Eric Clapton, Pete Townsend and Ringo Starr teamed up to play a New Year’s Eve gig together in Surrey on.

According to The Independent, the trio sold tickets to the gig, at an unnamed location, for under £50 each, with proceeds going to charity.

A source told the newspaper that the band were called Totally Abandoned for the night, and the three legends performed “mainly old classics”.

So just how did this gig stay a secret? And how did it take three days to finally get some press??

I don't really have time to think about that after seeing this post on The Who's official website, about what seemingly points to the re-teaming of Pete and Slowhand at MSG in February.....

"Pete Townshend to perform at a major gig in New York? After his performance at an annual village gig laid on by pal Eric Clapton for New Year's Eve, the rumour's now going around that Who guitarist Pete Townshend is going to be performing at "a much larger gig" in New York sometime before March. No further details are available."

If I wasn't excited enough for that gig, this puts it well over the top.

This is a band a band that played 13 shows in NYC this year - moving from Bowery Ballroom to the cavernous Terminal 5, with stops along the way opening for Arcade Fire. It's quite impressive for a band that plays moody, bruting, dark rock. Here they are with "Mistaken For Stranger".....

Following in the tradition of the American Beauty Project - that brought together a diverse group of musicians to celebrate the Dead's American Beauty and Workingman's Dead album comes the announcement of The Royal Albert Hall Project which will honor Bob Dylan's much revered 1966 concert.

Here's some info, including the list of performers....

A very special tribute to the music of Bob Dylan, honoring Dylan’s storied 1966 concert—long the Dylan bootleggers’ favorite, and released legit by Sony on CD in 1998. Critic Dave Marsh reviewed it in Creem magazine, writing “It is the most supremely elegant piece of rock ‘n’ roll music I’ve ever heard” The recording includes Dylan’s now-legendary confrontation with a heckler calling out “Judas” from the audience. This concert features distinctive roster of singer-songwriters, bands and instrumentalists perform their own arrangements of the Dylan classics, in sequence from the original show.

All new interpretations of Dylan classics performed by Laura Cantrell, Stevie Jackson (Belle & Sebastian), Marshall Crenshaw, Oakley Hall, Nicole Atkins & Lenny Kaye, Jason Isbell, Jim Lauderdale, Toshi Reagon, Kelly Joe Phelps, Freeman, Harry Manx & Kevin Breit, The Last Town Chorus/Megan Hickey, Jesse Harris, Richard Julian & Jim Campilongo, Chocolate Genius Inc. and others.

The free show kicks off the New York Guitar Festival on January 12th at the World Financial Center Winter Garden at 8 PM.

Well we have our first official confirmation for '08 as WSMV in Nashville broke the news that Robert Plant and Alison Krauss will grace the Manchester grounds - so much for hipster music blogs.

The unlikely duo put out the critically acclaimed Raising Sand album earlier this year - which you should definitely pick up. You can also tune in to WXPN on Monday, December 24th for the re-broadcast of their appearance on the World Cafe - or just head here and stream it from their archives now.

So no Led Zep, but this is a start.

"Over these 5 nights the band will endeavor to perform every song in their now extensive ouvre (or is that canon)? This includes all the studio recordings and their contributions to the Mermaid Avenue records. Plus, who knows what else? To further clarify, the plan is NOT to do the material sequentially or chronologically. Rather, they're just going to attempt to cover it all over the 5 shows. It'll be a real blast, we're certain."

The Complete Wilco

Very cool news coming out from the Wilco camp as they announced the following about their hometown five-show run at the Riviera Theater....

“Over the five nights, we will attempt the ‘complete Wilco’ and try to clear out the dusty corners of the catalog that we haven’t attended to in a while.”

Jeff has mentioned in several interviews that now that this incarnation of the band has been together for awhile now, that he wanted to go back play some of the older material that his "new" band mates hadn't learned yet.

Now if they can only add a New York date or two to their Spring run - hint, hint.

In other Wilco news Sky Blue Sky was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Album - going up against the likes of Bruce Springsteen and the Foo Fighters. This marks the fourth time the band has been nominated and the fourth different category to boot.

I guess stumbling onto "lost" Woody Guthrie material shouldn't come as too much of a surprise considering the amount of it that has surfaced over the years, leading to a number of releases - including the fantastic Mermaid Avenue albums. What has alluded Guthrie fans though has been any actual live recordings of the famed folk singer in action - that is until now. Elevator Music For Headbangers Returns

After roughly a three year hiatus the vastly underrated instru-metal-jazz-rockers the Om Trio announced through their MySpace page that they will make it's return to the stage in February. The band will offer up a three night run in their former home base of San Francisco opening two nights at the historic Fillmore for their friends Umphrey's McGee and playing the show after party at the Boom Boom Room on the third night.

As quickly as rumors get started they also get squashed just as easily. So before the hellfire from Bonnaroo fans could light up message boards saying how Superfly is ruining the festival with booking Metallica and they'll never attend it again, etc. Q Prime Management - who represent the hard-rockers - flat out denied the report that the band will be in Manchester next June. Just like baseball's Hot Stove I guess it's never too early to get the Bonnaroo line-up rumor mill going. Here's the first big rumor to emerge and it's quite a dandy (via Digital Media Wire).....

An anonymous reader tipped Bob Lefsetz, author of The Lefsetz Letter, yesterday about an interesting development in the live music world: “Zeppelin just confirmed for Bonnaroo. They can't officially announce until after the London gig so pass it on! Also Metallica is confirmed on the bill too!”

Anyone who has experienced the unique event that is Bonnaroo (or its younger sibling Vegoose) knows the four-day Manchester, Tennessee show’s trademark is its eclectic mix of bands. Considered “the largest hippy festival in the world,” as Andrew Stockdale, lead singer of Wolfmother said onstage last June, the festival organizers always manage to add plenty of non-hippy artists. In 2007 there was also the addition of a “classic” billing, the reemergence of The Police.

If the anonymous reader is right about Zeppelin and Metallica, Bonnaroo 2008 has a leg up on alternatives like Coachella before ’07 is even finished.

Make of it what you will. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant have repeatedly stated that their one-off performance will be just that and their will be no full-blown world tour. Last year around this time the big rumor was Pearl Jam was headlining and then it was The Police - which actually turned out to be true.

As for the Metallica part - your guess is as good as mine. I think it would stir a lot of controversy among the Bonnaroo faithful, but so did the booking of Tool.

I honestly can't stop listening to The Felice Brother's album Adventure's Of The Felice Brothers, Vol. 1 - it's pretty much the only thing that's gotten played on my iPod this week. While I love the entire album (and it's sure to be in my Top Ten this year), the album opener "Frankie's Gun" is absolutely infectious and thought I'd share this live version. Enjoy....

While The Band and Dylan comparisons may get on their nerves - well at least according to this article - that song could have been a long, lost track from The Basement Tapes.

The Felice Brothers open for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band next Friday night at Highline Ballroom - get tickets here. Unfortunately I'm already heading out to Hoboken for Yo La Tengo, or else I'd be there, but be sure to grab you're copy of Adventures Of.... - since it's only available at their shows.

Just stumbled onto this site today - Baeble Music - wondering how I didn't know about it before since it looks like its been online for awhile now. They've got a ton of great live concerts that you can watch right on their site from the likes of Ben Kweller to Northern State to Blonde Rehead.

Free Apples Cost A Lot

I guess giving out all those free apples at the Fillmore NY @ Irving Plaza (I still hate that name), costs more then you'd think. Check out the details of the Live Nation's New York holiday party that's been floating around for the last couple of days (via Idolator & Brooklyn Vegan)....

It's that time of year again!! This year we will be having a combined celebration for the staff of Fillmore NY at Irving Plaza and Blender Theater at Gramercy. Here's the important info:

When: Friday, December 7, 2007 from 8PM-11PM

Where: Downstairs lounge at Gramercy (127 E. 23rd just in case you didn't know...)

What: Karaoke!! And other good times...

Drinks: BYOB- sorry guys, this is a no-budget party, not to mention you people drank a warehouse worth last year... Seriously, please bring a bottle of your favorite booze or wine or a six pack o beer (or your fave Snapple drink if you don't drink alcohol.)

Upset Alert?

Quick detour from the world of music to talk a little about college basketball - smooth transition right? Unless you attended a school in the ACC, Big East, Pac-10, etc. playing national ranked teams is no big deal. Graduating from a school in a so-called mid-major conference it's not too often that your school gets to play teams in the Top 25 and rarely do you get a chance to do battle with the #1 team in the country, but tonight the upstart George Washington Colonials take on #1 UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. Ok this has ass-kicking written all over it, especially going in as 19 point underdogs. There is some good news though as ESPN put this game on their Upset Watch, check it out....

Wednesday: George Washington over No. 1 UCLA The Bruins flexed their muscles in beating a very good Michigan State team without preseason All-American point guard Darren Collison, guard Michael Roll and forward James Keefe. All except Keefe may return for the GW game. Could their possible return to the lineup cause a disruption in the rotation? How effective will Collison and Roll be in their first game of the season? Will they need time to get their game legs under them? Colonials coach Karl Hobbs has embraced the up-tempo style and recruited to fit the pressing, in-your-face defense. GW plays with great effort and often the defense can be its best offense by turning steals into easy baskets. Guard Maureece Rice, a 6-1, 224-pound power guard, returns after testing the NBA draft waters in the spring. Forward Rob Diggs and Virginia Tech transfer Wynton Witherspoon will provide the bulk of the scoring and rebounding. Kevin Love is the truth, but could this be a hiccup for the mighty Bruins?

We do have some history against number one teams beating UMASS twice over the course of two seasons when they sat atop the poll - the first time at GW (back when we had a logo that looked like this) and one of my Top Five sports moments I've been at.

I Heard It ThroughThe Grapevine

While we here in the Northeast are a bit spoiled when it comes to the opportunity to see great music on a nightly basis, we have been neglected in the large-scale music festival department - we'll turn a blind-eye to the debacle that was Field Day and Bonnaroo Northeast.

Today Billboard is reporting that we will in fact be getting a music fest to call our very own set to take place next August 8th - 10th on a 500 acre site in Vineland, NJ which has been dubbed, wait for it.....the Vineland Music Festival. Ok, not the sexiest name going, but it will be produced by the folks at C3 Presents - the guys bring you ACL and Lollapalooza, so that's a definite plus. Band offers are already out, but nothing is confirmed as of yet- read about the whole thing here.

Best Band Ever

Could it be that two of my favorite singer/songwriters are teaming up form a band? Well according to a post over at Pitchfork it looks like Connor Oberst and M. Ward plan to record an album together next year - read all about it here, and let's keep our fingers crossed.

Here's the duo performing the gorgeous, yet spooky "Smoke Without Water" from the Bowery Ballroom show I was at earlier this year....

Don't be surprised if over the course of the next months you see the name The Felice Brothers being thrown around a lot. These guys just finished up the holding down the opening slot on the East Coast leg of the Bright Eyes tour and at least at the Radio City show Connor invited one of them on-stage to play accordion for a song. They have a "tour only album" called Adventures of The Felice Brothers, Vol. 1 that I've been listening to non-stop for the last couple of days. It's a fantastic Americana album rooted in The Band, The Jayhawks, Bob Dylan, Los Lobos and even a bit of Tom Waits. From time to time I get some albums sent my way (hint, hint to the powers that be out there), I figured I should probably get some music reviews up on this here blog. So with that in mind I recruited my eager music loving friend Dan The Man (who also posts things here) to help handle the task of cranking out some critiques. For the inaugural post - in what I hope to be a continuing series here - is his take on the latest from Vanessa Carlton - Heroes & Thieves (not your typical HFTB artist, but hey doesn't mean it's not worth giving a listen to)....

Vanessa Carlton has what Kelly Clarkson wants - a writer’s credit on all her songs and the so-called “artistic integrity” that comes along with it. What V.C. doesn’t have, however, is a pop anthem that would make for a killer theme song on The Hills (Natasha Beningfield has it locked down anyways).

At any rate her new album Hero’s and Thieves (and first for her new label The Inc. - don't worry she hasn't gone gangsta) has Carlton crooning with a singer-songwriter’s passion and sincerity that many of her fellow female pop singers struggle to understand. While it’s doubtful that any of these songs will burn up the charts and ride the royalties train like her hit single “A Thousand Miles” (currently underscoring Zales Diamonds commercials), tracks like “The One” with Stevie Nicks and “Come Undone” prove Carlton’s versatility as a vocalist and her maturity as a pianist. It's on the albums first single “Nolita Fairytale” that Carlton proves that she can still ride the pop radio air-waves with catchy loops and peppy lyrics and even tug on heartstrings of more than a few lovesick highschoolers.

Though judging by the spending habits of Carlton’s target demographic (with their bedazzled cell-phones and closets full of neglected Bratz dolls) musical virtue won’t move the kind of units that pay for the beach house in Malibu (The ‘Bu) - perhaps it's that distinction that will work out for VC in the long run. Carlton doesn’t fit the caricature of the stunningly hot starlet with a so-so voice and a completely submissive role in the creative process. She’s kind of cute in a ridiculous “independent” way, and when beauty fades for the rest of the pop singers, VC will still have her artistic talent. Like its creator, the album has staying power and both Carlton and her work can only get better with age.

Thanks to the fine folks over at Wolfgang's Vault we can now experience it for ourselves and without the long breaks between acts - which seemed to slow down the show and lead to some unenthusiastic reviews. You Can Get Everything You Want

So as we all rush off to wherever we are going for Thanksgiving to eat ourselves into a food coma, wanted to once again tell you about the annual musical tradition we have at the HFTB household that being the listening of Arlo Guthrie's classic - and quite hilarious at times - 18-plus minute anti-establishment ode - "Alice's Restaurant Massacre".

You can watch this live performance that is cleverly inter-cut with scenes from the movie or if you're in the New York City area Q104.3 will be playing - as is the custom - at noon tomorrow. So put down that turkey leg and kick back and listen, you'll be glad you did.

Well Anthony Kiedis and his fellow Peppers seem to think otherwise as they filed a lawsuit against Showtime claiming "'Californication" to be the signature CD, video and song of the band's career. Kind of a bitchslap to "Under The Bridge" if you ask me. And wait isn't this also a band that had a huge hit with a Stevie Wonder song too?
